Sloppy Joes: love ’em or hate ’em? (Please say you love them….)
I didn’t grow up eating sloppy joes. I might be the only kid born in the 70’s that can say that but it’s true. Don’t worry, we ate a plethora of other ground beef dishes (it was the late 70’s after all) but for whatever reason, sloppy joes didn’t make our nightly dinner rotation. So it’s not that I didn’t like sloppy joes as a kid, I just wasn’t really exposed to them. And let’s be honest, it’s not the most appetizing of dishes aesthetically so I wasn’t beating down any doors to try them.
That all changed though the summer of ’99. Not only is that the year I met my now husband, but I was also introduced to what is known as the sloppy joe. My love affair started when I was waiting tables at a small mom and pop restaurant. Sloppy joe’s were a once a month special and after serving them for years without thinking twice about them, I finally decided to try this sloppy joe sandwich that everyone raved about. One bite and I was sold. It was hard not to fall in love with the savory and slightly sweet concoction of ground beef and sauce. I quickly learned that I preferred to eat a big bowl of sloppy joe meat minus the bun and instead of silverware I opted for ruffled potato chips to carry the meaty, savory mess to my mouth. (Classy, I know.)
I started out just eating the sloppy joe meat as is but quickly graduated to topping it with cheddar cheese and pickled jalapeños though chopped dill pickles will do in a pinch. I still like to eat sloppy joes with potato chips and if you haven’t tried your joe with salt and vinegar kettle chips then, well, it’s safe to say you have not lived. As much as a carb lover as I am, I don’t really like sloppy joes as a sandwich. The bread takes away from the goodness plus it means I can’t eat as many potato chips. To this day, I eat my joes minus the bun.
Just recently (like last week) I learned that sloppy joes are really good made with ground turkey and they are perfect for topping a steamy baked potato that’s been baked to perfection with olive oil, garlic powder and sea salt. This is quintessential football food and this recipes is perfect for a lazy sunday. The sloppy joe mixture is cooked in the slow cooker and the baked potatoes take like 37 seconds to prepare before you throw them in a hot oven. Grate some cheese, open a jar of pickled jalapenos and, folks, dinner is served. Make sure you’re wearing your stretchy pants because you’ll want to go back for seconds.

- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 lb lean ground turkey meat
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1/2 cup of your favorite bbq sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons worchestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 3-4 dashes hot sauce, optional (I like Crystal brand)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 4 russet potatoes
- shredded cheese, diced pickles, diced pickled jalapeño, diced onion (optional)
- Heat vegetable oil in large skillet over medium-low heat. Or if you have this amazing Hamilton Beach slow cooker, you can heat the oil right in the base on the stove top.
- Add chopped onions and cook until softened about 5 minutes.
- Add ground turkey and cook just until the meat is no longer pink. Add garlic and cook one minute more, stirring the meat to break up any large pieces.
- Remove from heat and transfer to slow cooker.
- Stir in tomato paste, bbq sauce, ketchup, worchestershire sauce, soy sauce, hot sauce and pepper if using.
- Cook on low 4 hours.
- Meanwhile, bake the potatoes in a preheated 400F degree oven. I like to rub just a bit of olive oil on the potato skins and sprinkle with kosher salt and pepper. Bake on a cookie sheet for 45-50 minutes until softened all the way through.
- Split baked potatoes in half lengthwise and slather with desired amount of sloppy joe meat. Top with shredded cheese, diced pickles or jalapeños and red onion.
