Popcorn with Brown Butter, Chocolate Covered Raisins & Sea Salt

This popcorn (or the inspiration behind it) is one of the best things my husband has contributed to our relationship.

My husband brings a lot to the table (literally and figuratively) in terms of being an awesome partner. The first year we dated he told me that if I wanted the relationship to work then I would need to get better at snowboarding as that’s where he spent his free time in the winter. I can now hang. He took me to my first Jazz Fest in New Orleans and I’ve been back every year since with the exception of the years I was pregnant. It’s pretty darn magical. I’d never been to a proper Jewish deli before we started dating and let’s just say I’ve been plenty in the last ten years. It’s the first thing on my to do list whenever we go back to New York.

I was introduced to this popcorn concoction on our first proper date. You know, opposed to the first two dates that were more drunken bar excursions than proper grown up dates. But I digress. Our first official “date” was to see the movie, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Pete being the gentlemen that he is *cough*, didn’t ask me if I wanted anything from the concession stand. He took the lead and ordered a jumbo popcorn and a box of Raisinets. After tripping up the stairs and spilling half of the popcorn (that was me), we settled into our seats and attempted to stifle the giggles from me planting full superman style on the stairs. Once we recovered, Pete promptly opened the box of Raisinets and poured the whole box into the popcorn. It was nothing short of life changing. Salty, buttery popcorn with sweet, slightly melting chocolate covered raisins.

The only problem with this delicious salty-sweet combo was that it was really hard to stop eating. Nothing short of addicting. It was so much easier to indulge all those years ago. No kids, a quicker metabolism. So even though I love the combo, it’s not often that we order popcorn anymore at the movies. I always eat too much and I always end up feeling slightly sick afterwards. God, to be twenty again and eat whatever I wanted. But since that’s not going to happen, I had to take matters into my own hands.

This homemade version gets a classy makeover using machine popped organic corn, real butter that’s been toasted slightly until it’s nutty and golden, flakey Maldon Sea Salt and chocolate covered raisins I got from Whole Foods. I still can’t eat a ton unless I plan on living in stretchy pants for the rest of my thirties but I don’t get the icky feeling after eating it that I do from the movie theatre popcorn that I love so much. Since we don’t find a ton of time to go to the movies anymore anyway, we can curl up on the couch, popcorn in hand, and enjoy a flick without having to leave the house. Kind of perfect, you know?
